What to wear to a Christmas dinner

Smart, warm, and something you can eat a full meal in. In that order.

A Christmas dinner is a smart occasion with a very specific constraint: you are going to sit down and eat a large meal. Anything fitted at the waist is a decision you will regret by the second course.

It is also the one evening where texture earns its place. Velvet, satin, a heavy knit, wool with some depth to it: all of it reads as effort under warm indoor light where a flat fabric does not.

Houses are either far too warm or draughty, and often both in different rooms. A layer you can take off without the outfit falling apart solves the whole problem.

The rules, short

Room to eat
Smart, but with give at the waist. This is not the night for the tightest thing you own.
Texture
Velvet, satin, brushed wool, a cable knit. Under warm light, texture does what colour cannot.
One layer
A jacket or fine knit you can remove and still look finished underneath.
Shoes
You may be on a tiled floor for hours. Smart, but not the pair that hurts.
