What to wear to a party
One thing that catches the light, the rest quiet. That is the whole formula.
A party outfit is one strong piece and a quiet frame around it. Two strong pieces compete, three is a costume. Pick the thing you want people to notice and let everything else recede.
The strong piece does not have to be loud. Texture reads as effort in low light where colour does not: satin, velvet, leather, a knit with some depth to it.
Rooms are hot and evenings are long. Whatever you choose, you should be able to stand in it for four hours and still want to be there.
The rules, short
- One accent
- One piece with colour, shine or texture. Everything else in a neutral, and the outfit reads as deliberate.
- Low light
- Texture beats print after dark. A flat black knit disappears; a ribbed or satin one does not.
- Shoes
- You will be standing. Choose the pair you can still walk in at the end, not the pair that photographs best at the start.
- Layer
- Take something you can leave at the door and still want to be seen carrying home.
