What to wear to a wedding as a guest
Smart enough to honour the couple, quiet enough not to upstage them. And shoes you can still stand in at midnight.
A wedding asks for a step smarter than you normally go, and for clothes you can spend twelve hours in. Those two demands fight more often than you would think: the best-looking shoes are rarely the shoes you are still standing in at midnight.
Read the invitation first. If there is a dress code, that is your answer. If there is nothing, assume smart: a suit or a jacket with tailored trousers, or a dress at or below the knee.
The only hard rules are not about style but about etiquette. Do not wear white or anything that photographs as white, and do not wear a colour the couple has said is reserved.

- One step smarter than you normally go. When in doubt, bring the jacket; you can always take it off.
- Venue
- Outside on grass? A block heel or a flat. A stiletto in a lawn is an evening of suffering.
- Layer
- Churches are cold and so is the evening. A fine knit, a wrap or a jacket is part of the outfit, not an emergency.
- Fabric
- Sit down in front of the fitting room mirror. Whatever creases in thirty seconds creases all day.
