What to wear to the gym
Clothes that move, breathe and stay where you put them. Nothing else matters here.
The gym is the one place where clothing is equipment. It has to move with you, move sweat away from you, and stay where you put it when you are upside down on a bench. Everything else is decoration.
Fabric does almost all of the work. Cotton absorbs sweat and then hangs wet and cold on you for the rest of the session; technical fabrics move it to the surface where it evaporates. This is the single biggest difference between comfortable and miserable.
Fit is the second thing, and it depends on what you are doing. Lifting wants something that does not restrict your shoulders or hips; running wants as little fabric as possible; a class wants something that stays put when you invert.
The rules, short
- Fabric
- Technical, not cotton. Cotton holds sweat and turns cold the moment you stop moving.
- Shoes
- Flat and stable for lifting, cushioned for running. They are not the same shoe and doing both in one is how people get hurt.
- Fit
- Nothing that restricts your shoulders or hips, and nothing so loose it catches on equipment.
- Layers
- Something to warm up in that comes off in one movement. You will want it for ten minutes and not again.
