What to wear to a funeral
Quiet, cared for, and not the thing anyone looks at. It is not about you, and your clothes should say so.
The rule is simpler than people expect: dark, neat, and nothing that asks for attention. Black is still the safest answer, but charcoal and navy are just as correct in most of Europe, and you will actually wear them again.
What matters more than the colour is that it looks cared for. A pressed shirt and polished shoes say "I made an effort for this", and on that day the effort is the message.
If you are unsure how formal it will be, look at the card. If it says nothing about clothing, assume neat, and follow the immediate family: some ask explicitly for colour rather than black.
The rules, short
- Colour
- Black, charcoal or navy. White only as the shirt underneath.
- Top
- A jacket over a shirt or a plain fine knit. A blazer turns almost anything into something formal.
- Bottom
- Tailored trousers, or a skirt or dress at or below the knee. No jeans, not even dark ones.
- Shoes
- Leather, dark, polished. No trainers, however clean they are.
- Outdoors
- Part of a funeral is almost always outside. Bring a dark coat you can stand around in, and an umbrella.
